Welcome to Markup AI! This guide walks you through the key steps to set up your account and start checking your content during your trial.
Step 1: Create Your Brand Profile
When you first log into Markup AI at console.markup.ai, you’ll land on the dashboard with a prompt to Create Your Brand Profile.
- Click “Share Your Brand Standards” to begin setup.
What you’ll see:
An “Add Your Materials” dialog will appear with two sections:
Guidelines (left side)
Markup AI uses these to extract your brand rules. You can provide your style guide in any of these ways:
-
Paste a URL if your guidelines are hosted online
-
Upload a local file (PDF, Word, Markdown, or HTML) — e.g., your style guide PDF
Examples (right side)
These are content samples Markup AI will analyze to learn your brand voice. Aim for 3–5 examples of your best-performing content.
- Paste a URL or upload files in the same supported formats
Once you’ve added your materials, click “Save & Configure.” Markup AI will process your files and extract your brand rules in the background.
Step 2: Install the Google Chrome Extension
While your brand profile is being configured, install the Markup AI Chrome extension so you can use it inside Google Docs.
-
Click the “Add to Google Chrome” button in the app, or search for Markup AI in the Chrome Web Store.
-
Click “Add to Chrome” and follow the prompts to install the extension.
This extension is what powers Markup AI directly within your Google Docs workflow.
Step 3: Review and Refine Your Brand Profile
Once your materials have been processed, return to Brand Profile in the left sidebar to review what Markup AI extracted.
You can review and edit across these sections:
Voice & Tone
Review the tone and communication style rules extracted from your uploaded content. Edit or delete any rules that don’t accurately reflect your brand.
Rules
A list of writing rules pulled from your style guide. You can adjust, delete, or add new rules.
Fingerprints
Stylistic patterns that represent your brand’s writing signature (7 extracted by default in the example).
Personas
Audience personas that your content should resonate with. You can:
-
Select from suggested personas
-
Create a custom persona — a great way to test content against your target reader and receive feedback on how well it will land with that audience
Terms
Words and phrases marked as Preferred or Prohibited. Markup AI will flag violations when checking your content.
-
Review all terms
-
Add industry-specific terms, product names, or brand terminology that must be used correctly or avoided
Performance Optimization Labs (LABS)
A set of experimental AI agents that provide additional value-add checks. These include:
-
Claims — Identifies verifiable or promissory language
-
Freshness — Flags stale content and outdated references
-
Q&A Optimization — Detects header/answer authority issues
-
Source Authority — Identifies content lacking credibility signals
-
Fluff — Finds indirect body sentences
-
Key Takeaways — Ensures a short list of key points is present near the top
-
Snippet Readiness — Evaluates whether each section can stand alone as an AI-cited answer
Recommendation: Keep Performance Optimization Labs turned on — these agents help your content perform well in AI search.
Step 4: Check Your Content in Google Docs
Open a Google Doc you’d like to check. You’ll see the Markup AI logo in the right panel of your Google Docs interface.
-
Click the logo to launch Markup AI.
-
If prompted, log in to connect your account and brand profile.
